“Capping off an eventful weekend, the Screen Actors Guild Awards telecast was far from silent on politics. Throughout Sunday night’s festivities, there were quiet yet clear protest signs from stars like Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg and Jocelyn Towne, as well as more vocal messages—like Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s speech, in which she called Donald Trump’s executive order banning entry to refugees and travelers from seven predominantly Muslim nations “a blemish” and “un-American.” But perhaps the most viral moment of the evening was David Harbour’s impassioned acceptance speech on behalf of the Stranger Things cast—a sweeping defense of everyone who has ever felt ostracized, and a rallying cry for artists, that brought the audience to its feet. On Monday, the actor told Vanity Fair what inspired his speech—and what he hopes viewers took away from it, as well as from the Netflix series as a whole.

“I think that a lot has been made about my speech,” Harbour told Vanity Fair Monday afternoon, “and I want people to really understand how proud I am of the show—and of the work of the other cast members and the artists who are involved. And whatever you think politically, watch the show. I think you’ll be moved.”
