An animation of a double acting steam engine. The double acting steam engine has two power strokes per cycle. Steam is admitted to the cylinder by means of a sliding piston valve. This is out of phase with the displacer piston by 90 degrees - this ensures the correct timing of the steam entering into the cylinder.
