My former employment includes over 20 years at a Ford auto dealership. I have ordered over 30,000 vehicles from the factory. Almost all customers select a new vehicle from the dealer's lot. However there are several advantages to special ordering a vehicle. With a special order you get exactly what you want. The price of the vehicle will probably be lower because there will be no options that you do not want. You may also be able to negotiate a lower price for an order than an in stock vehicle. You may also be able to avoid paying for extras that dealers frequently add to their stock vehicles; for example window tint, paint sealer, pin stripes, alarm systems etc, etc. Also an ordered vehicle is less likely to have a scratch or nick than a vehicle that has been on the dealer's lot for months.
If you decide to order a vehicle the first step is to choose exactly what model, color, and options you want. Note that some vehicles have packages of options that are a better value than buying individual options. Next get a printout with your selections and the dealer's price. (Larger dealers may have a fleet department with staff that is knowledgeable about special orders.) (Most retail salespeople are not skilled for special orders) It is best if the print-out for your proposed order has the list price and the dealers invoice amount . If it does not they will probably provide a list / invoice print-out if you request it. For many domestic models you will be able to negotiate a price near the dealers invoice cost. (The dealer will typically make 3% to 4% if they sell the vehicle at the invoice amount.) Negotiate with multiple dealers if necessary to get a good price. A small deposit should be acceptable unless you are ordering a very unusual vehicle. The dealer you order from should explain your rebate or low financing options to your satisfaction. The vehicle will usually arrive in about 6 weeks. You can check out your financing options a couple weeks before the vehicle arrives. If you have a trade-in you can get a bid from the ordering dealer and possibly see if another dealer would buy your old car outright for a larger amount. Or you can sell your trade yourself.
It really is not hard to special order a vehicle. If you want to do it I hope this info helps!
