He first found major success with the science fiction action film The Terminator (1984).

In total, his directorial efforts have grossed approximately US$2 billion in North America and US$6 billion worldwide.

1. Failure is an option, but fear is not
He worked several jobs, including as a truck driver, writing when he had time.

2. Paint your dreams for real
He quit his job as a truck driver to enter the film industry after seeing Star Wars in 1977.

3. Just do it
While educating himself in film-making techniques, he started working as a model maker at Roger Corman Studios.

4. Strive for excellence
Making rapidly produced, low-budget productions taught him to work efficiently.

5. Value your past experiences
For the role of the Terminator, he envisioned a man who was not exceptionally muscular, who could "blend into" a crowd.

6. Visualize your success
During 1980s, he wrote three screenplays: The Terminator, Aliens, and the first draft of Rambo: First Blood Part II.

7. Find your drive
After his film True Lies (1994) he took on his biggest film at the time, Titanic (1997).

8. Be a person of your word
After Titanic, he began a project that took almost 10 years to make: his science-fiction epic Avatar.

9. Do something good
Between making Titanic and Avatar, he spent several years creating many documentary films.

10. Seize the moment
In 2011, he was named Hollywood's top earner by Vanity Fair, with estimated earnings of $257 million.
