The overheating Xbox 360 issue is very common, and mostly due to the amount of heat being generated in what is quite a compact console. It's really a disaster having your Xbox 360 overheat on you when you're playing Street Fighter on Xbox live.
You can recognize the overheating Xbox 360 issue by the red ring on the top left and bottom left and there is a simple fix if you are a little computer savvy and because the Xbox is pretty much a compact computer you can open it up and replace the fan quite easily.
The key to attaching a new fan and keeping your Xbox 360 cool is to buy a high quality thermal paste. The thermal paste helps produce a better seal between the core processing unit and the fan heat sink unit. Look for thermal paste that comes with a brush so you can easily apply It otherwise you'll have to use your credit card to spread it and believe me that does not turn out so great when you try and use your card later on.
What not to do?
A big mistake people make is putting a desk or floor fan right behind the Xbox console and have cool air blowing into the back of it. This will actually do more bad than good as the internal fans are designed to collect air from inside and blow the hot air out the back to cool the unit.
Simple Fix for Xbox 360 overheating
A very simple way to solve all your Xbox overheating and freezing issue's is to buy a cheap USB fan from your electronics store and simple plug it and position it to suck out the hot air and help it get out faster.
Remember like any console it will overheat due to dust and dirt getting into it, and I usually blow air out of it with a straw but that's not always the best option. Getting a can of compressed air can deliver short bursts of air to clear dust from the fan and heatsink
