The "Web Blog" - aka Blog- has more utilitarian functions than merely "a daily composition or essay comprising one's own 'take' on news, society, and life itself".
Blogs nowadays are such "literary masterpieces"; a true testament to general improvements in writing and editing prowess; hence one tends to assume that bloggers are showcasing their best journalistic stylings for some profound reason; maybe: to achieve monetary gain, or even to cop a job with some magazine company.
Disappointingly this is not always the case: Some bloggers are just writing aimlessly- the articles mostly benefiting the "followers" of the blogs- not the bloggers, themselves. Tactically used, a blog can be a source of income for any blogger. In fact, to not understand how utilitarian a blog can be is to not conceive of its full potential and if I may say, at the risk of sounding deprecating, would therefore be a waste of talent, time and resources.
If you already have a blog, update it at least once a week or more, and have a dedicated league of "followers", then chances are you may have the ability to convert some of your followers to "paying customers". But what are the steps to take in order to make your blog more utilitarian?
Step 1: Redefine your blog's mission . Meaning, try writing down in point form the main aims you wish to accomplish with the blog. Try writing a mission statement if you like; because this form of strategizing adjuncts that of the marketing ace, you now aspire to be.
Step 2: Can I make money by just blogging? The answer to that question is yes. If your blog experiences a steady increase in followers, even if it just one new follower / week, you must be saying something they find interesting or relevant. Try to identify what that topic is, and perhaps fine-tune your blog entries to accommodate more of that topic. You might be an expert in a particular area or field of study, say computer drawing and / or animation. Due to ever increasing costs of living, people tend to gravitate towards articles that teach new DIY skills. It might therefore be fairly reasonable to place a notice on the home page, asking members or followers to "kindly contribute" to the site's upkeep.
Step 3: How is the blog most utilitarian when promoting a product / s? Blogs are also ideal for introducing new products to "cyber" market. The word capacity of a blog allows the writer flexibility in writing on virtually any product technicality. Even then, you must keep the blog entertaining by interspersing technical blogs with those of interesting commentary. A blog can also act as a portal to a product's website. Many website hosting companies offer banner advertisements as part of their service packages. The blogger selects the size, shape, style and animation that he wants to appear on the blog. The text of the banner can also be customized, for example it could say: "Want to create your own Twitter? Click here!" When all customization is completed a "source code" with all the data for the banner has to be carefully integrated with the HTML coding within the Web blog.
