Coping with stress can be challenging. Often change is a catalyst for stress, but what if we could use change as a stress relief technique for our benefit, and to reduce the stress in our lives. It seems that we are faced with stress more and more each day in our lives, and some argument that it is becoming a health epidemic. We hear the stories of executives having a heart attack and dying at their desks, but we do not think that could happen to us. Think again!
If you are over worked and over stressed and are not taking steps to change your life, then the likelihood is high that you will meet the same fate. At the very least you will look back on your life and regret that you did not make the necessary changes to get your life back, and to eliminate stress.
We are filled in many different directions each day. We have family obligations, and obligations from our jobs and friends. We find that we have very little time left for ourselves, but say to ourselves that this is ok, that this is just how life is supposed to be. That is not true. Who says you must create a life for yourself that includes stress?
If any of this sound like you, first know that you are not alone, and second know that you can make changes in your life to reduce or eliminate stress.
It all starts with you! Your first priority is to take care of yourself, and stop worrying about friends, family, and your job. Make a list of all of the things that are creating stress in your life, and then develop a plan to eliminate them. It is really as easy as this.
If you are already coming up with reasons in your mind why you can not do this, then the first step for you is to stop making excuses ... stop lying to yourself. Learn to be honest with yourself. Set time aside in your busy day to reflect on those areas in your life that add stress, and ask yourself why they are there and how to get rid of them. REALLY listen to yourself, and then commit yourself to changing your behaviors.
It will be difficult in the beginning. This is simply part of the process of change and should be embroidered, you do not need to be perfect just moving in your intended direction. You should begin experiencing a snowball effect in your life, as you replace a stressful activity with a positive activity you free up more time to focus on those things that bring you joy, and the cycle continues and expands.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "No one can make you a victim without your consent." You have the power to change your life by using change as a stress relief technique, and to take control of the stresses in it. Give yourself a break and celebrate the good things in your life. Find ways to bring laughter into your life, a tried and true stress reliever. Avoid stressful situations, and continue to work on your list. The old adage "Life is too short" is true, do not spend yours stressed.
