Why Skipping Meals Does Not Work For Weight Loss

There are quite a few people who want to lose some extra weight especially since it is now swimsuit season. It is a positive goal to become more healthy with better eating habits, adding in some exercise, and losing a few extra pounds of fat or even more. While the goal is health, many people go through very unhealthy methods to actually lose the weight they need to lose.

One very unhealthy thing that is done is to skip meals. The logic is that the person is gaining weight because of eating too much. If you skip a meal here and there, you are eating less. Less food intake equals weight loss. While the logic is sound, it's not actually good advice over the long run.

The first problem with skipping meals is that you are going to be hungry. Many would think this is what is supposed to happen on a diet. Actually you can change the way you eat by getting less sugars, fats, and carbs while not actually reducing the volume of food that you actually ingest. If you begin to skip meals to try and lose weight, it's not something you are going to be able to stick with long term and it can lead to problems in the future. It's better to change the way you eat so that you can develop healthy eating habits as a long term weight loss option

Another problem with hunger is that you are eventually going to snap. There is only so much of missing lunch you will be able to take before you head to your favorite fast food joint and pig out on your favorite meal. This is why frequent smaller meals has better success because people don't feel like they are lacking and you are keeping your body's energy levels steady which helps cut down on food cravings.

Some try to skip meals long term which in a sense is starving off the weight. While this might sound like a strategy that is guaranteed to lose weight, it's very unhealthy. Most of the weight lost will be muscle. Your body won't be able to burn calories on it's own as effectively, leaving you with a body that is prone to gain considerably more weight once you start eating normally again as your body will replace the muscle that you lost with fat making losing weight that much more challenging in the future.
